Having too much fluid in our body is called fluid overload. This happens when we are consuming more liquid than we are passing out. Fluids are anything that is liquid at room temperature including soups, gelatins, ice creams and popsicles.

Fluid is removed from our body through sweating and urinating. Our kidneys do the work for us, but sometimes the kidneys are unable to remove all the liquid waste, so we have to control how much liquid we consume.

Too much fluid buildup can cause swelling, headaches, stomach bloating and difficulty breathing, so it is important to speak with your doctor and dietitian on how much fluid you should consume daily, especially between visits to the dialysis clinic.

Here are some ways you can manage your thirst, while following your fluid restriction guidelines.

  1. Measure your liquids
Use a container to measure all your liquids during the day. Ensure you know your fluid limit, so you do not consume over your restrictions.
  2. Journal
Writing down all the liquids you consume, and their quantities daily is a great way to track your fluid intake.
  3. Size matters
Use smaller cups to drink from to ensure you stay within your fluid goal.
  4. Use a mist
To keep your mouth moist, you can use a spray bottle to mist your mouth.
  5. Freeze your liquids
Freeze juices and liquids in ice cubes so you can enjoy them like popsicles. Using ice chips is another great option.
  6. Frozen grapes
Freeze grapes to be enjoyed as snack, while managing your thirst.
