Men are less likely to see a health care professional than women and studies continue to show that women are healthier than men. Why is this so?

Men tend to both drink and smoke more than women do and are more hesitant to go to the doctor than women would. Most men often only visit a health care professional when there is an emergency, and would also skip any preventive screening.

This makes it pretty clear why more men have strokes, cancers and heart disease than women.

These conditions are all preventative with early detection and a preventative lifestyle.

Men, it is time to take care of yourself, and here is why:

  1. Early detection is best

The earlier you detect a health concern, the easier it is to treat. Men should be open to any recommended screenings from a health care profession as this gives a snapshot into their health status. Keeping track of your health and placing preventative lifestyle in place can keep illness at bay.

  1. Live your best life

Living a healthier life means you can enjoy life more and longer. Falling ill can greatly decrease your quality of life and make it hard to do the things you enjoy. Traveling, enjoying time with kids and family or just spending time with your partner can be affected.

  1. Love your heart
    • Heart attacks are a serious health risk and can be life threatening. Men are generally at higher risk for a heart attack than women and have them earlier. Managing your cholesterol level, managing your blood pressure and adding regular exercise can help. This is all manageable through a lifestyle change. You should work closely with a dietitian to decrease your risk for a heart attack through diet and lifestyle.
  2. Protect your prostate

Prostate problem can come in three conditions: enlarged prostate, prostate cancer or an inflamed prostate.

The best way to protect your prostate is nutrition and staying active. Frequent consumption of foods like green tea, fish and tomatoes offer men a shield to protect their prostate.

  1. Stress less

Stress can affect many parts of your life as it can make you less productive, less mentally sharp, and generally make life harder. Stress can also increase your risk for high blood pressure and can make sleeping difficult.

You should make sleep a priority and develop healthy ways to reduce and control the amount of stress in your day.
