Part 1- Vitamin D- More than an immune builder

Vitamin D, also known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’, is much more than we talk about. In the past year Vitamin D became famously known because it can help build your immune system.

There is more to vitamin D than just keeping your immune system strong. Here are some other reasons to include vitamin D daily.

  1. Reduces the risk and stops the growth of fibroids in women.
  2. Vitamin D can decrease body fat levels. Having low vitamin D levels encourages the body to store more energy.
  3. It helps with your bone health. It keeps your bones strong and prevents osteoporosis (a type of bone disease).
  4. High levels of vitamin D improves asthma control and the severity of asthma attacks.

Part 2- Reaching your Vitamin D recommendations

Reaching you Vitamin D recommendations requires the perfect balance of a healthy diet and daily sunshine.
Foods rich in Vitamin D:

  1. Cod liver oil
  2. Salmon
  3. Tuna
  4. Sardines
  5. Mackerel
  6. Eggs (vitamin d in the egg yolk)
  7. Liver

Include at least 2 of these foods daily, along with at least 30 minutes of sunshine.

Make a special effort to reach you vitamin D level if you fall into any of these categories:

  • If you do not go outdoors often
  • Dark skin
  • Adolescent or over 65 years
  • Overweight or obese

Fortunately for us in Barbados we have sunshine all year round, and do not need supplementation (unless recommended by your dietitian or medical practitioner). It means though, that we must have special effort to get our daily vitamin D by going outdoors.
